Dog Calorie Calculator Guide: Connect RER, MER, and Food kcal
How to calculate daily dog calories from RER, MER, neuter status, activity, weight goals, and food kcal/kg.
Calories come before grams. Without a daily calorie target, it is hard to know whether a feeding amount is too high or too low.
Calculation sequence
| Step | Value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Current weight | RER baseline |
| 2 | Target body condition | Lose, maintain, or gain |
| 3 | Neuter status and activity | MER adjustment |
| 4 | Food kcal/kg | Convert calories to grams |
| 5 | Treat calories | Subtract from meals |
RER is commonly estimated as 70 x body weight(kg)^0.75. A rough shortcut is 30 x body weight(kg) + 70.
MER adjusts that baseline for daily life. A neutered adult may start around RER x 1.6, a low-activity dog lower, and a weight-loss plan often lower still. These are starting points, not fixed prescriptions.
If the food is 3,900 kcal/kg, each gram has 3.9 kcal. A 300 kcal target equals about 77 g before treats.
